We host several annual recreational events to which we invite young people from area group homes and officers from the local police and sheriff’s departments. These events create a relaxed environment for the young people and officers to get to know each other and reinforce the sense of police as a supportive and not threatening presence.
At times, we work with students and families involved in disputes or disruptions at school for which the police have been called. In these situations, the police often have the option to employ Station Adjustments which lessen the long-term ramifications for the students. We do not advocate but work to educate students and parents about the importance of observing school policies and the potential consequences of acting out.
Recently, we supported a local mentorship program for teens sponsored by one of the local churches. Two of the local police departments with which we work closely provided placements for students interested in policing
