our work

The three pillars

Picture
Youth Engagement
Our first pillar focuses on our community youth.   It is young people who will act to re-imagine and change the role of policing as it evolves from law enforcement to community engagement as a defining principle. Through their broad social connections and experience, young people can eradicate the racial, ethnic, religious, and class barriers that have served to separate the country.  They bring the hope of limitless possibilities and equality, and are a key to the better future we all seek.

Law Enforcement
The second pillar, law enforcement, serves to demystify the police to the public. We also work to sensitize law enforcement to historical and cultural issues that may create challenges for them in encounters with minority groups and may explain in part the fear inherent in such encounters. We come to this challenge with the goal of finding common points of understanding from which we can work jointly and proactively to end the myriad of heart wrenching reports in the news and elsewhere that feed the negative stereotypes associated with law enforcement and minority groups.  We see breadth of engagement, community oriented police focus, and education as essential ingredients of trust building and crime reduction.  We see systemic improvements revealing themselves in the form of improved civic engagement and greater diversity in all areas of the criminal justice system, and in the elevation of the policing profession overall.

Community Outreach
As its third pillar, Unity Partnership is committed to rebuilding trust between the community and law enforcement. History is replete with examples of difficult encounters that have devolved into violence with tragic consequences.  While the police have attempted to ensure order and compliance, their actions have, at times, left members of minority communities feeling their rights were violated. It’s important for law enforcement to acknowledge these feelings, to admit any wrongdoing, and to correct systemic practices that may have contributed.  It is equally important for the community to understand and respect the roles and responsibilities of the police. We stand with law enforcement to deliver the message of a new beginning. As the community sees real change occurring, we hope that even the most aggrieved and reticent will be willing to re-engage. We do not speak for our communities; they did not direct us to fix challenges in today's policing.  We chose this work because we believe it is important to building a better, safer, more equitable world.
